Speaker Profile:

Pietro De Laurentis, professor at Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, doctoral supervisor, selected participant of the national-level talent program, researcher at the Institute of Asian and African Studies at the University of Naples, and resident representative of the SIRENA architectural restoration company in China. His research focuses on the history of Chinese calligraphy, Chinese literature, Chinese history, and semiotics. He has published 5 academic monographs, over 50 papers, and translated 4 works, a member of the Expert Committee of the Er Wang Studies Research Center.

Lecture Content:

Scholars studying the history of Chinese calligraphy often face the issue of how to collect, understand, and cite original materials. As a long-term researcher in the history of calligraphy and a Western individual not belonging to the Chinese cultural sphere, the speaker has been learning calligraphy since the early 2000s and currently teaches at a Chinese university. He has gone through several different stages, including the construction of basic knowledge and professional expertise, and how to further explore and achieve breakthroughs in academic achievements based on existing academic foundations. In terms of his personal research, on one hand, it involves accurately understanding the original text when reading and translating literature into Italian and English; on the other hand, it involves integrating materials, writing papers, effectively communicating with editors, and revising papers according to their requirements to ultimately present academically significant works. This lecture aims to provide some insights into specific methodological issues in academic research and academic translation based on personal academic experiences, hoping to benefit younger colleagues in conducting research and translation work more effectively.
