Speaker Introduction:

Zhang Falian, Qian Duansheng Chair Professor at China University of Political Science and Law, distinguished professor at Beijing Language and Culture University, doctoral supervisor, and postdoctoral collaborating supervisor, is the president of the National Research Association for Legal English Teaching and Testing, vice president of the China ESP Research Association, and vice president of the China Bilingual Studies Association. His research areas include legal language and logic, legal translation, legal language economics, legal English teaching and testing, legal diplomacy, and American studies. In recent years, he has published over 80 papers in such key journals as Foreign Language Teaching and Research,Chinese Translators,Application of Law and Contemporary World and published over 50 books including Comparative Studies of Chinese and Western Legal Language and Culture,Dictionary of English and American Legal Termsand Studies on American Trademark Law Cases.He has led major and key projects of the National Social Science Fund, projects from the Ministry of Education in the Humanities and Social Sciences, and several projects from the Beijing Social Science Fund. He is the editor-in-chief of the journal Language and Law Studies, a peer reviewer for the National Social Science Fund, and the vice chair of the National Committee for the Legal English Certificate (LEC) National Examination Expert Committee.

Lecture Content:

National legal translation capability is an important component of national translation capability and an indispensable core element in building the socialist legal system with Chinese characteristics. It directly determines the effectiveness of China’s international legal communication. The construction of foreign-related legal systems is an important aspect of governing the country by law comprehensively, and legal translation serves as a booster for foreign-related legal work. Improving national legal translation capability is a systematic project that cannot be achieved overnight. This lecture analyzes the conceptual connotations of international legal communication and national legal translation capability, discusses the close relationship between enhancing the effectiveness of international legal communication and national legal translation capability, and offers suggestions for improving national legal translation capability. To enhance national legal translation capability, one must raise awareness, improve top-level design, focus on translation process control, emphasize legal translation education, strengthen legal translation competency testing, and highlight the professional ethics of legal translators.
