The 14th “Shangyan Forum”lecture by Professor LüShisheng was successfully held on June 27 via Tencent Meetings.A doctoral supervisor from the School of Translation and Interpreting at Beijing Language and Culture University, Professor Lüwas invited to give a lecture titled “The International Dissemination of Marxism in Greece: Translation, Interpretation, and Discourse Power Method” hosted by Zheng Dongsheng and attended by all teachers, graduate studentsand other experts and scholars.

Professor Lü first reviewed the development process of Marxism’s international dissemination. And the dissemination processes in different societies exhibit distinct characteristics, and different Marxist factions compete for the interpretative power of Marxism, promoting the dissemination of The Communist Manifesto in Greece. The struggle for interpretative power manifests itself through text translation, adhering to the logic of power struggle. In this struggle, the Greek Communist Party employed discourse interpretation strategies, gaining advantages in the interpretation of the Greek The Communist Manifesto and thus obtaining the interpretative power of Marxist discourse.

Professor Lü introduced the struggle process shifting from text translation to the discourse interpretative power of The Communist Manifesto. In the translation process, choosing specific meanings from multiple semantics often depends on the translator’s understanding of the original text, negating other translated texts and establishing the orthodox status of one’s own translation.

Professor Lü argued that The Communist Manifesto is a knowledge text, and the cross-linguistic dissemination of knowledge texts will face different historical and cultural traditions and social realities, inevitably undergoing shifts in meaning. The historical processes and characteristics of dissemination will therefore differ, and the history of Marxist theory dissemination in Greece supports this assertion. By comprehensively reflecting on the dissemination history of Marxism in various countries, we will deepen our understanding of the international dissemination of Marxism through historical and international comparative analysis.

At last, the participating teachers and students engaged in in-depth discussions with Professor Lü on topics related to the international dissemination of Marxism.
