The National-Level First-Class Translation Major Construction Series: “Innovation in Foreign Language Classes: Experiences and Reflections from Teaching Innovation Competition” Successfully Held January 5, 2024 A lecture by Yi Long of the Department of Translation, SFL named “Innovation in Foreign Language Classes: Experiences and Reflections from Teaching Innovation Competition” was successfully held in the afternoon on January 4, 2024 as part of The National-Level First-Class Translation Major Construction Series on the TEDA campus. Hosted by Zheng Dongsheng, it was welcomed by all faculty members who attended. Yi Long, whose team’s course “Interpretation Practice” won the first prize in Tianjin at the 3rd National Teaching Innovation Competition for College Teachers in 2023, started with a brief overview of the 14-year reform journey of his course of “Interpretation Practice” before focusing on the innovative practices of“immersive simulation” interpretation project, including the innovative background, concepts, measures and outcomes. In response to national and social development, the construction of new liberal arts, and the future development of students, the reform of this course hopes to address three major headaches in undergraduate interpretation teaching practice (the contradiction between students’ diverse career interests and needs and the single teaching objectives of the course, the lack of interdisciplinary knowledge among students versus the urgent need for multidisciplinary knowledge in interpretation, and the need for improvement in students’ language skills against the “duck-feeding” teaching model). It establishes an innovative teaching concept of “cross-disciplinary competence and practical empowerment” in interpretation, emphasizing collaborative negotiation between teachers and students, achieving comprehensive improvement in students’ interdisciplinary knowledge, high-quality interpretation products, information analysis and processing, and 5C literacy. Yi emphasized that with the innovative measures, translation students have been immersed in various simulation projects such as food nutrition and safety, marine ecology, industrial design, artificial intelligence, and automation, undergoing a complete project cycle every 2-3 weeks to include data collection and analysis, targeted language training, data exchange and value recognition, classroom reinforcement training and Q&A, peerassessment, and team reflection and revision. With student team performance competition and diverse assessments, the course embodies labor value, highlighting the pursuit of more work for more rewards and high quality for high scores. In the process of solving difficulties, ideological and political education effects can be achieved. Yi showcased the gratifying results brought by the course innovation. In recent years, undergraduate students of the translation major have significantly improved not only in the quantity and quality of interpretation practice but also in digital literacy, academic competition, and comprehensive abilities. Notably, in recent years, undergraduate students of the translation major have repeatedly entered the national finals of the National Interpretation Competition, a significant achievement in the national-level first-class translation major construction of the SFL. Yi also shared the experience of participating in the National College Teachers’ Innovation Competition, explaining important elements such as the preparation of teaching materials, the writing of outcome reports, the teaching demonstration, and the on-site defense, providing references for other peers engaged in foreign language teaching reform. In conclusion, Yi Long stated that in the new era, innovation in college foreign language teaching is imperative and innovation is not a difficult task.Foreign language educators can leverage the power of teamwork, start from small initiatives, prioritize practice, and bravely cross boundariesthrough continuous summarizing and exchanging to achieve systematic reform and establish unique teaching models that influence the future.Gu Yi, Wang Zhenping, and other attending teachers engaged in in-depth discussions. Finally, Party Secretary Zhang Bo and Dean Chao Luomongof the SFL highly recognizedYi Long’s efforts and achievements in teaching innovation and encouraged SFL faculty members to actively innovate in practice. |
